Las Vegas is a city famed for its casinos, attractions and active nightlife. Billed as the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas is exceptionally populous and surrounded by the arid beauty of the desert. Las Vegas is more than the famous sin city, however, and is surrounded by other unincorporated communities such as Paradise, Winchester and Enterprise, as well as Henderson, North Las Vegas, Summerlin, Sunrise Manor, Spring Valley and Boulder City. Properties in Las Vegas span between the affluent mansions that sprawl before Red Rock to the acres of open desert where smaller homes dot the horizon. Las Vegas is primarily composed of casinos, fine dining and hotels these days.
The earliest known visitors to Las Vegas were nomadic Paleo-Indians who first discovered the valley, followed several thousand years later by the Anasazi and Paiute tribes. Rafael Rivera, a young Mexican scout, is credited to have been the first non-Native American to discover where Las Vegas would form in 1829. A trader by the name of Antonio Armijo would lead a 60-man party along the Spanish trail and would help culminate the name “Las Vegas” which translates to “the meadows”. Las Vegas itself was founded as a city in 1905 when 110 acres of land next to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks were auctioned in what would help formulate the downtown area. In 1911, it was fully incorporated. 1931 was the year Nevada legalized casino gambling and with the nearby construction of the Hoover Dam, the city was set to make a large impact on the map.
At present, Las Vegas is home to mega casinos and is a global leader in the hospitality industry. It is the 29th most populous city in America, with the population presently measuring over 2,000,000 and growing.
Las Vegas is situation in a basin on the floor of the Mojave Desert and surrounded by various mountain ranges on all sides. The landscape is arid, rocky and filled with desert-based vegetation and wildlife. The city itself has many well-kept and green laws, shrubbery and general greenery, however. While it used to be subject to flash floods, the improvement in the drainage systems has done much to negate these effects.
The climate is a subtropical desert climate that is standard in the Mojave Desert. Sunshine nearly year round is normal, and there are barely any instances of tornadoes. The summer months are especially hot and dry, ranging in 90 °F with lows of 80 °F come nightfall. The winters are especially short and mild. Very little precipitation or humidity is typical in Las Vegas and its surrounding areas.
Being the “Entertainment Capital of the World”, those visiting or living in Las Vegas can expect an abundance in shopping opportunities. The main city and its surrounding areas are filled with shops where shoppers can pick up anything from designer clothing to tourist trinkets
