Rafael Rivera, a young Mexican scout, is credited to have been the first non-Native American to discover where Las Vegas would form in 1829. A trader by the name of Antonio Armijo would lead a 60-man party along the Spanish trail and would help culminate the name “Las Vegas” which translates to “the meadows”. Las Vegas itself was founded as a city in 1905 when 110 acres of land next to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks were auctioned in what would help formulate the downtown area. In 1911, it was fully incorporated. 1931 was the year Nevada legalized casino gambling and with the nearby construction of the Hoover Dam, the city was set to make a large impact on the map.
